Location:  Columboola EEC

Working in small groups, students design and then build their own bush shelters using natural materials.  Students must examine different group viewpoints and ideas and negotiate the final design.  Connections to Indigenous shelter, survival and shelter building through history are discussed.

  •  Explore the characteristics and properties of materials and components that are used to produce designed solutions
  • experimenting with techniques to combine or alter materials to satisfy a function

Year 3-4

  •  Investigate how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour of a product or system

Year 5-6

  •  Critique needs or opportunities for designing, and investigate materials, components, tools, equipment and processes to achieve intended designed solutions
  •  Select appropriate materials, components, tools, equipment and techniques and apply safe procedures to make designed solutions

General Capabilities

Prep-Year 2

  •  practise individual and group decision making in situations such as class meetings and when working in pairs and small groups

Year 3-4

  •  contribute to and predict the consequences of group decisions in a range of situations

Year 5-6

  •  contribute to groups and teams, suggesting improvements in methods used for group investigations and projects
  • initiate or help to organise group activities that address a common need
